Statement
This body of work represents the essence of playfulness and imagination inspired by photographs of childhood toys. Compositions are abstracted and exaggerated through drawing and painting. My process is intrinsically playful, and the exploration continues into the ceramic pieces which capture a sense of spontaneity through intuitive making. I create these pieces by ‘playing’ with the materials in response to the photographs and drawings.
I am influenced by architecture and most of the forms feature ceramic spheres that evoke movement. The curvature of each piece creates a dynamic feeling. It is as though the spheres are captured mid movement, the curving surfaces are an integral part of the design, allowing the work to change in the light.
The bright monochromatic colours of the ceramics are reminiscent of the toys of childhood, bringing an element of fun and energy to the work while acknowledging the nostalgia and freedom of play.
