Statement
My work aims to engage with the complex phenomenological question of what it means to have a body. I do this by presenting abstract anatomical forms as a deconstructed representation of the body. Drawing inspiration from the concepts and aesthetics of the Grotesque, I create these forms through mixed media. My work showcases the physical properties of my chosen materials, where I explore how their natural materiality can capture an embodied tangibility of the body. I pursue this line of inquiry in order to achieve a visceral sense of the matter and intricate systems that build up our anatomy, as a reminder of what our bodies are made of, and of just how unknown these internal systems are to us. The works are displayed along with metal components, prompting feelings of vulnerability that invite the viewers to think about the fragility of the body and how those feelings can apply to our experience of health, mortality, autonomy and pain.
