Statement
I am intrigued by the peripheral and barely glimpsed, the liminal spaces and the half-forgotten ambiguous nature of time and memory.
A historical archive of long forgotten handwritten love letters, dating from 1915, allowed me the opportunity to retrace a family romance.
Providing direct personal insight and experience, these letters bring the voice and phrases of the past to light and allow time to compress.
Approaching this material using sublimation printing and the traditional technique of hand stitching retraces, echoes, and connects with the written word.
Our idea of privacy has changed considerably since 1915. Protecting the author’s personal integrity and privacy was essential to this work.
