Statement

My work explores how depression and the subsequent loneliness, self-isolation, shame and self-doubt affect the development of identity over time. I utilise painting, 3D elements and sound to create physical interpretations of the internal self and human experience. The legacies of artists such as László Fehér and Ángela de la Cruz inform my research into abstracted self-portraiture and the deconstruction of painting, while the philosophy of existentialism acts as a framework for my theoretical investigations. My intention is to push the boundaries of what it means for a piece to be a self-portrait. By creating a landscape of sensory experiences, I explore the ways in which the internal self can be made visible.
