Statement
I work primarily in lens-based media, specifically photography and video. Printing on recycled paper and card materials, such as disused feminine products, to create compositions which combine photography and both personal archive and collected, scanned images and texts. Themes of motherhood and childhood, with a particular focus on the bond between mother and child, are explored through these mixed media collages. These prints are then enlarged and folded back to the original medical box shape. The sound piece helps merge these ideas in an installation with the animated moving image as the main work. The animation comes from reflections and subconscious ideas around the process of giving birth and the power of the female body, as well as referencing earlier animation styles and specific palettes. Inspired by the stigmas around the figure of the mother as intellectual, and the power of the female body, I research artists such as Ana Mendieta, Louise Bourgeois and contemporary reflections and practices on art and motherhood.
