Statement

My practice explores the complexities of my lived experience in a position of dual identity, shaped by my combined Indian and Irish heritage. This in between space has moulded how I view my identity and drives this exploration which intertwines culture, memory, and notions of belonging. I often think about what it means to be connected to more than one place, and the role that memory and displacement can both play in blurring and building a sense of self.

I explore representing this concept of cultural hybridity through mixed media, by creating Indian stylized patterns in my work while living in Ireland gives me the opportunity to reflect on this cultural hybridity. I work with bright repeated patterns printed on fabric pairing it with patterned objects cut from wood. I emphasize repetition and layering to create installations, the act of repetition and layering these materials in my work both materially and conceptually act as a metaphor for visually embodying this layered sense of identity and memory.

Ultimately my work seeks to generate a dialogue between both cultural influences conveying the complexity but also beauty of existing between worlds, engaging in a deeply personal conversation while also encouraging the viewer to use the experience as a site for cultural self-reflection.
