Roisín Reilly
Statement
My name is Roisín, and I am an illustrator with a passion for conservation, environmental causes, and all things ocean related, especially sharks. When the chance to work on an illustrated children’s book that focuses so heavily on all of these topics arose, I had to grab it.
”Luna the shy angel shark accidentally gets tangled in a ghost net. Can her sea creature friends work together to save her from the net?”
A project in collaboration with Irish Elasmobranch Group promoting the conservation of sharks, skates, rays and chimeras in Irish waters. This project is an illustrated book, aimed at children aged between 4 to 7 years old, highlighting the threat different pollutants such as nets and plastic bags left in Tralee Bay pose to the animals in the bay, and the bay itself. Tralee bay is home to the critically endangered angel shark. This story will follow a young angel shark, named Luna who loves to hide under the safety of the sand. She makes friends with a jellyfish above the sand who loves to play hide and seek, which leads to Luna getting caught in a ghost net. Different animals in the bay work together to help free Luna from the net. The aim of the story is to educate children about the animals in Tralee Bay, specifically angel sharks and the danger pollution poses to animals in a fun, colourful and way.
Angel Shark Conservation Network
Since 2016, the ASCN Partners and a wide range of collaborators have focused on developing strategic conservation planning documents for angel sharks.
A number of Action Plans have been developed at different geographical scales via multidisciplinary workshops. All these documents sit underneath the Eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean Angel Shark Conservation Strategy, and aim to identify the key actions needed to overcome major threats to angel sharks in each specific region.
The ASCN actively encourages individuals or organisations across the range to get involved in delivering the Action Plans in collaboration.
