Sorcadh de Róiste

Statement

My practice explores metamorphosis in relation to performative identity. I examine how identity shape-shifts in response to societal pressures and expectations, camouflaging the true self. I am particularly interested in how coping mechanisms such as scripting social encounters and mirroring behaviour are used as tools for camouflage.

My practice primarily involves using photography and sculptural elements to realise my concepts. Utilising techniques that blur the subject and abstract the imagery allows me to explore multiple selves in motion. This sense of distortion and fragmentation prompts an intensive inquiry of the self in the viewer.

My work aims to question how identity transforms under different social conditions, and encourage the viewer to reflect on their own shape-shifting behaviours.
