Statement
Referring to the theories of the psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, my work explores the concept of dreams and how the subconscious mind interprets the suppressed thoughts and emotions felt by the individual during sleep.
My work is primarily narrative based with reference to cinematography, due to the use of staged film shots and inclusion of props. Each painting portrays an intimate moment as part of a series of storytelling. The oil paintings are firstly drawn out roughly on gesso coated board in a sienna pastel which can been seen up close under all the transparent layers of a limited palette consisting of burnt umber, burnt sienna and yellow ochre tones.
This series of works is also influenced by the film maker Andrei Tarkovsky, the photographer Duane Michals and painters including Michaël Borremans and J.M.W Turner.
