Statement

The exploration of identity and its relation to the figure is at the core of my practice. Investigating the disconnect between one’s identity and body acts as visual representation where my work sits in an imagined narrative of creating your own body. How does one construct the physical being they will be represented by if they do not recognise themselves in any of the options? Collecting fragments from known examples of what a body can look like I piece these fragments together in an attempt to create something that feels both recognisable and absolute. This process becomes cyclical, as a disconnect between self and vessel ultimately leads to a rejection of the body that has been created. Using the mediums of collage, image transfer, and sublimation printing, the materials with which these figures are made purposefully take on a skin like quality. Heads and faces are noticeably absent from my practice, highlighting the pieces as representations of a concept of ‘the body’, not a body with ties to a specific look or individual.
