Emma O'Riordan

Statement

My research informed practice seeks to visually portray personal narratives, within broader societal commentaries related to the experience of womanhood, dissecting this as an impersonal but gendered lived perspective. Through figurative representations, captured by expanded painting and drawing, my work addresses the subsequent effects of issues such as sexism, misogyny, and violence against women, focusing on feelings of disembodiment. Each element of the work is meticulously considered, with all aspects deliberately referring back to the works core ideologies. Through physical application, colour palette and display mechanisms, I explore Ideas around power-dynamics, the known / unknown, strength / fragility, as well as the domestic, monotonous everyday exposed through the use of hinges and architectural components, utilising these methods as a way of conveying the complexity, hidden nature or trauma of such experience and Its subjectivity. My work is not only an external form of introspection, but an idea and representation of realities faced universally by many women today.
