Statement

I work primarily with textiles and mixed media. This installation is a tribute to my grandparents who left a lasting impression on my family. They passed on important values and ethics and left us with beautiful memories. They lived through two World Wars and during times that were not easy. All material things were minded, repaired and reused. My work reflects elements of their lives from the stitching and patching of fabrics to making rag rugs with clothing that could no longer be worn. Ceramics have been saggar fired or stained with oxides, the markings represent cooking on an open fire. I have salvaged wallpaper from the now derelict house which was their home for over 40 years. This wallpaper is included in my work as the current walls of peeling layers of paint and paper are steeped in history and memories of ancestors gone before us.
