Statement

My work currently is strongly rooted in Irelands history with women. The history of this State is one of containing the women of Ireland, mentally and physically, often aligned with the conflicting images of women propagated by the close relationship with the Catholic Church. When we look at the Magdalene Laundries and Mother and Baby Homes, the ideas of sex and sexuality are held strongly against women. The women who entered these institutions found themselves stripped of their basic human rights; the rights to their own bodies.
Using photography and sound I have created an immersive and intimate space with images from The Good Shepard Laundry and an unregistered Mother and Baby Home in Cork. Conversations are still needed regarding the wrong doings that went on behind the doors of these institutions and with this series I hope to do just that. While documenting these sites I was denied access to the Bessborough Mother and Baby Home which only solidifies the ideas that there is still a sense of secrecy and confinement linked to these sites.
