Statement
Through the mode of textiles, I express my thoughts of identity, growth, mental health, home, and gender. The tactile, eclectic, and material qualities of patchwork; I employ as a diary of sorts, allowing me to freely express my thoughts and emotions utilising a textiles process that encourages spontaneity, intuition, and colour.
My work features traditional quilt motifs, such as the sawtooth star, combined with visuals taken from my own drawings and photographs. I frequently return to quilt patterns as symbols of comfort, and the rich history behind each pattern provides a sense of being connected to something bigger than myself. Combining these traditional patterns with my own drawings, inspired by folk illustrations, I aim to highlight the human experience, showcasing freedom, joy, sorrow, and melancholy through majestic animal and human forms.
I believe we are more than just our physical bodies, and, to me, the quilt represents an extension of that body. The traditions, the care, the comfort that the quilt provides grants us the chance to free ourselves from our material worries, anxieties, and insecurities, and move freely through the world.
