Tara Fitzgerald

Statement

My work revolves around landscape, my surroundings, and ideas of memory and connection to place. I explore these themes through gestural and abstract painting, using abstraction as a means of portraying my perception of the world around me. Painting, drawing and collaging outdoors allows me to create in an immediate and responsive way, embracing the sensory experience of being surrounded by nature. I capture a variety of atmospheres by focusing on colour, shapes and movement, conveying the different feelings my surroundings leave with me.
My process of working outdoors and then back in the studio is intentional and significant to me because they greatly inform my large scale works, and through the act of painting, I relive and re-access these memories. Using expressive, colourful marks and collage, I abstract the landscapes that I encounter daily, and depict the places dearest to me. Incorporating elements of my everyday life allows me to reflect on and appreciate their impact. Using collage helps me represent memory, as its fragmented appearance resembles how we recall certain aspects of a place we hold on to most.
